katagami

Katagami is a carved paper or stencil that is used for resist dying on Japanese Kimonos.  "Kata" means pattern and "gami" indicates paper.  These "pattern papers" are carefully handmade by skilled craftsmen who specialize in stencil carving.  Prior to the carving, several Japanese washi papers are adjoined to form a single sheet of paper and then soaked in tannin-rich persimmon juice (kakishibu) which adds the wonderful warm brown tone to the paper and makes it durable and water resistant allowing the carvers to work in precision.

Gallery Shibui obtained a collection of nearly 100 Katagami in 2007.  While we have sold many of these we have been able to obtain other old and very beautiful designs. The two katagami shown above are of the "Itoire" technique where fine silk thread is layered between the paper enabling larger detail.  They measure approximate 17" x 26".

There are many ways to enjoy Katagami.  One of the most exciting is to use it as a stencil print as it was originally used.  They can be displayed in frames or placed in glass table tops.  A lampshade made from Katagami will filter gentle light into your room.
