hina dolls
It is Japanese custom in the middle of February to bring out Hina Dolls for display for the coming of Girl's Day, March 3rd. Full sets of the dolls are often handed down from Mother to Daughter. The role of the Hina Matsuri or Girl's Day Festival is to pray for happiness and health for the girls.
Until recently May 5th was designated as Boy's Day. The displays for Boy's Day are typically gods, warriors, a white horse and other valiant animals. Now, however, May 5th is designated "Children's Day" to celebrate all Children and to honor their Mothers.
Gallery Shibui has an interesting selection of Hina Dolls. They make interesting displays, are full of detail, and are quite delightful.
